2 Dead in Chico, CA Shooter with "Long Gun" Dressed in all Black

AENN

CHICO, Calif. - 2 adults were killed and a teenager was injured in a shooting at the Butte County Library. Chico police received reports of an active shooter inside the library just after 5 p.m.

"We had an open 911 line that you could hear gunshots and people screaming," said Billy Aldridge, Chico police chief.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded as officers moved into the building to stop the threat. Investigators spent hours processing the scene.

"We had units, police officers, on scene very quick after the initial calls of 911," Aldridge said.

The teenager suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. The suspect was taken into custody shortly after officers arrived.

Police have not released the suspect's name or discussed a possible motive, saying the investigation is still in its early stages. The FBI, Butte County Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol and other agencies are assisting with the case.

"We don't feel like there's any further threat to the public. We have one person in custody, and further investigation is occurring to see if there's any further people involved in this," Aldridge said.

As police flooded the area, 1 bus passenger recorded video of officers responding near the library. The witness says she normally walks through the area after work, but changed her routine.

After learning what had happened, she realized how close she could have been to the shooting. "I got home and started finding out what exactly did happen. That fear, kind of set in, like, oh my, I could have been in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Jeannie Lee Schroder, a witness.

The library will remain a crime scene as investigators continue collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Police expect the investigation to continue well into the coming days as detectives work to determine exactly what led to the deadly shooting.

Officials say additional details are expected to be released in the coming days. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
