PLAINS GA — Former President Jimmy Carter, the World War II veteran and Georgia peanut farmer whose one-term presidency evolved into a post-White House life as a distinguished diplomat, active humanitarian and best-selling author, died Sunday, Dec. 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100 years old.
His son, Chip Carter confirmed that the former president died about 3:45 p.m., both The Washington Post and Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. His family was with the former president when he died, The Carter Center said.Carter was born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924.
Jimmy Carter had been in hospice care since February 2023. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November.
Carter’s presidency is largely remembered for formidable challenges he wasn’t able to overcome — mainly the energy crisis, high inflation and staggering unemployment. He made progress in foreign affairs, reopening U.S. relations with China and brokering a historic accord in the Arab-Israeli conflict, but his presidency was irreparably damaged by the Iran hostage crisis in which 52 American diplomats were held for 444 days, from Nov. 4, 1979, to Jan. 20, 1981.
Carter will be long remembered for giving away the Panama Canal for $1.00..
Teddy Roosevelt was President of the United States at the time of its building, and understood the strength of Naval Power and Trade. When President Jimmy Carter foolishly gave it away, for One Dollar, during his term in Office, it was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else.
It was likewise not given for Panama to charge the United States, its Navy, and corporations, doing business within our Country, exorbitant prices and rates of passage. Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way.
The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete “rip-off” of our Country will immediately stop….
President Donald Trump has pldged to return the canal back to the United States.
