A Democrat California assemblyman introduced a bill seeking to make “May Day,” or International Workers Day, a state holiday that would replace President George Washington’s or President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

Assemblyman Miguel Santiago’s (D-Los Angeles) legislation calls for consolidating the two presidents’ birthdays to be observed on the third Monday in February as a single “President’s Day” holiday, but it also calls for the state to observe May 1 as “International Workers Day.”

International Workers Day, also known as “May Day,” had been observed in countries under Communism for decades and was designated as an official holiday of the Soviet Union.

In Russia, workers still march to celebrate May Day, with more than 100,000 people coming out for the traditional May Day parade in Moscow this year.

But not everyone in the California Assembly was on board with replacing a president’s birthday with a holiday steeped in communist roots.

“Are we in competition to become the laughingstock of the United States?” Assemblyman Matthew Harper (R-Huntington Beach) asked in a floor speech Thursday. “This is ridiculous. This is insane.”

“Seriously, the substitution of adding International Socialist Workers’ Day? May Day? The day of parades in the Soviet Union?” Harper added. “I’m aghast that a bill like this would be able to make it through committee.”

Santiago’s May Day bill did not pass on Thursday, but the California Democrat made a motion for the Assembly to reconsider the legislation.

If it’s good enough for communists, it must be good enough for California. That’s the lesson some lawmakers in the formerly Golden State are trying to spread with a bill in the state assembly. They want to drop a school holiday honoring the country’s first or 16th presidents to make room for a new holiday that’s best known for the fearsome, America-hating military parades through Moscow in the old Soviet Union. But the idea is getting some fierce resistance. The bill, AB-3042, was sponsored by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, a Sacramento Democrat. According to a legislative analysis, the bill would change California law, which now requires schools to close for two days in February — once in honor of George Washington, once for Abraham Lincoln — to combine the days for only one holiday in February. The freed up day would be made available for schools to close on May 1, in honor of “International Workers’ Day.” Dropping a day to honor Washington or Lincoln in exchange for honoring international socialism might sound crazy to most people, but “crazy” is apparently defined differently in California. The bill has passed the Democrat-dominated assembly’s education and appropriations committees to make it to the assembly floor. The bill was read three times on Thursday and rejected each time, but Santiago has filed a motion to have it reconsidered, according to The Daily Caller. That means it still has a chance — and in California, “crazy” always has a chance. According to the analysis, Santiago’s office argues that “many of California’s students have never learned about the incredible struggles that workers undertook to win basic labor rights and build the middle class. In addition, many students in California do not know about the important role that immigrants have played in the labor movement and their fight to win basic human, civil, and economic rights.” Well, considering the state of public education in America — particularly in Democrat paradises like California — it’s a good chance American students aren’t learning about the “incredible struggles” that men like Washington and Lincoln undertook to win basic rights for all Americans. It’s an even better chance that American students don’t recognize May Day — the holiday Santiago wants to honor — as the main occasion for the totalitarians of the old Soviet Union to showcase the military weaponry that was going to defeat the United States if the Cold War ever turned nuclear-hot. As “Fox & Friends” reported Sunday, one California Assemblyman, Republican Matthew Harper of Orange County, called the bill out for what it is. “Are we in competition to be the laughingstock of the United States?” Harper asked last week on the assembly floor. “Are we going that far to the left?” As the responses showed, Harper had plenty of company in being horrified. California Democrats have already led their beautiful state — home to the mega-millionaires of Hollywood and the billionaires of Silicon Valley — into being the economic basket case of the country. The ultra-liberal lawmakers have made a mockery of the country’s laws with their stance on “illegal immigration,” a concept which seemingly doesn’t exist for California Democrats. Still, trying to force the state’s schools to honor a holiday historically associated with the most determined, deadly enemy the United States has ever faced is taking “crazy” to a whole new level. But if it’s good enough for communists, then for some lawmakers it’s good enough for California.

At least one California lawmaker wants his state to celebrate a communist holiday.
